Whole house water filtration for Ocala well water, in the order it goes in

Whole house filtration is a category, not a product. For a Marion County well it usually means three or four machines in a deliberate order, and the order decides whether any of them work.

In short

  • For a well, whole house treatment usually runs sediment, then iron and sulfur, then a softener, with UV only if a test finds bacteria.
  • A three-stage system for iron and hardness typically costs $2,500 to $5,500 installed.
  • Size the system from a laboratory test, not a free in-home demonstration.

"Whole house water filtration" is sold as if it were one product. For a private well in Ocala it almost never is. It is usually three or four machines plumbed in a row, each doing one job, and the order they sit in decides whether any of them work. That is also why quotes for "a whole house system" can be a few hundred dollars apart or several thousand.

The good news is that the expensive mistakes here are predictable, and nearly all of them come from buying before testing.

Start with the test, not the showroom

Two kinds of test answer two different questions. Bacteria and nitrate answer "is this water safe to drink", and the Florida Department of Health recommends testing a private well for both at least once a year, at roughly $20 to $30 per sample from a certified laboratory. Iron, hardness, pH and hydrogen sulfide answer "what equipment do I need", and without those numbers nobody can size a system honestly.

A free in-home test from a company selling equipment is a demonstration, not a water test. Have one if you like, but do not buy on the strength of it. What to test for, and where a Marion County sample goes.

The treatment train, in order

A 2026 cost guide for well owners gives the sequence plainly: sediment first, iron removal second, the water softener third, and ultraviolet disinfection last. Each stage protects the one after it. Iron reaching a softener fouls its resin. Sediment reaching an iron filter clogs it. Cloudy water reaching a UV lamp shields bacteria from the light.

The Well Guide, Whole house water filter cost

  1. Sediment filter. Catches sand and grit. Cheap, and it protects everything downstream.
  2. Iron and sulfur stage. An oxidizing filter converts dissolved iron and hydrogen sulfide into forms that can be filtered out. Aeration and oxidation are the standard approaches to hydrogen sulfide in well water.
  3. Water softener. Removes calcium and magnesium, the hardness this county's limestone is known for.
  4. UV disinfection, if the test calls for it. Only worth installing when there is a bacteria problem to solve or a real risk of one.

What Marion County water usually needs

Hardness is nearly universal here. UF/IFAS Extension in Marion County calls water above 180 mg/L extremely hard and says softening at that level is worth it to protect appliances and plumbing. Hydrogen sulfide, the rotten egg smell, is common in Floridan aquifer water. Iron varies a great deal from one well to the next. So the typical Ocala system is sediment, an iron and sulfur stage, and a softener, with UV added only if the bacteria test says so.

Two things the same UF/IFAS source says that sales conversations tend to skip: hard water is not bad for you, and softening adds sodium, roughly half as much as the hardness it removes. Many households soften the hot water and laundry and leave the kitchen cold tap alone for that reason.

Where people overspend

  • A softener bought to fix a smell. A softener does not remove hydrogen sulfide. Check which tap smells first; if it is only the hot tap, the answer is the water heater, not the well.
  • Whole house reverse osmosis for a drinking water worry. If the concern is only what you drink, a point-of-use unit under the kitchen sink treats that water for a fraction of the cost.
  • UV with no bacteria result behind it. It is a real safeguard when it is needed and an annual lamp bill when it is not.
  • A system sized from a doorstep test. Iron, sulfide and hardness levels choose the equipment. Which of the three kinds of iron you have matters as much as how much.

The permit question

Marion County requires a permit for the installation, alteration, repair, removal or replacement of any plumbing system regulated by the technical codes, and treatment equipment is plumbed into that system. The county does not publish a line specific to softeners. What that means in practice, and the call that settles it for your address.

Before you sign for a system Five questions
  1. Which lab test is this sized from?

Ask to see the numbers for iron, hardness, pH and hydrogen sulfide.

  2. What order are the stages in, and why?

A quote that lists the boxes without the order has been priced, not designed.

  3. What does it cost to run each year?

Salt, media, cartridges, lamps. Get the figure in writing.

  4. What flow rate is it sized for?

An undersized system drops your pressure every time two showers run.

  5. Who pulls the permit?

If the answer is that none is needed, get that in writing too.

Questions people ask

How much does a whole house water filtration system cost in Florida?

For well water, published 2026 ranges run from about $500 for a basic sediment filter to $10,000 or more for a complete multi-stage system. A properly sequenced three-stage system for iron and hardness, with no bacteria problem, typically costs $2,500 to $5,500 installed.

Is a whole house water filter worth it for well water?

When a lab test shows iron, hydrogen sulfide or high hardness, treatment at the point of entry protects fixtures, appliances and laundry across the whole house, and for most Marion County wells some treatment is worthwhile. When the only concern is drinking water, a point-of-use unit at the kitchen sink is often the better value.

What is the best water filtration system for a Florida well?

The one sized to your own test results. For a typical Floridan aquifer well that means a sediment filter, then an iron and sulfur stage, then a softener, with UV disinfection added only if bacteria are a concern. The order matters as much as the equipment.

Do I need a water softener in Ocala?

Most Ocala well water is hard, and UF/IFAS considers softening worthwhile above 180 mg/L to protect appliances and pipes. It is not a health question: hard water is not bad for you. A softener will not fix iron above low levels or a sulfur smell, so test first.

Before you hire anyone

Calling a well contractor? Check three things first.

  1. 1The license. Every Florida water well contractor is licensed. Ask for the number and look it up at the state's contractor verification clearinghouse.
  2. 2The diagnosis before the price. A pressure switch reading, the tank's air charge and the cable readings, before anybody quotes a new pump. The six questions to ask.
  3. 3The permit, if a rig is coming. A new well needs one before drilling starts, and it is the contractor's job to have it. Who issues it.
