Iron, sulfur and hardness are three problems, not one

They come from the same limestone and arrive in the same glass, so they get talked about as if one machine fixes all of them. It does not, and buying the wrong one is the most expensive mistake in this subject.

Why the water here is like this

Florida began under a shallow sea full of calcium-carbonate organisms, and what those left behind is the rock this county sits on. UF IFAS puts it plainly for Marion County: wells here draw water from within that carbonate landmass, so calcium and magnesium dissolve into the groundwater on the way through.

The same rock explains the smell. Hydrogen sulfide is produced when sulfate-reducing bacteria metabolise the naturally occurring sulfate minerals in that carbonate. The iron is simply iron, present in the aquifer and picked up in solution. None of the three means a well has gone wrong.

Which of the three you have

Work this out before anybody quotes equipment. Two of the three can be identified at a kitchen sink in ten minutes.

  • HardnessNo lather, white scale and spots on glassware. Calcium and magnesium from the limestone. This is the one job an ion exchange softener is genuinely for.
  • IronOrange or brown staining on fixtures and laundry. Which of three forms it takes decides the equipment, and a softener handles only low levels before the resin fouls.
  • Hydrogen sulfideThe rotten egg smell. Treated by aeration, an oxidising filter, or chlorination according to the level. A softener does not remove it at all.

Hardness, and the numbers to ask for

UF IFAS calls water above 180 mg/L extremely hard and says softening at that level is worth it to protect appliances and pipes. Below that it becomes a judgement about how much the scale and the soap annoy you.

  • Hardness is not a health problemUF IFAS states it directly. Calcium and magnesium are an essential part of the diet, and the case for softening is about appliances, laundry and skin.
  • Softening adds sodiumPer unit of hardness removed, roughly half is replaced by sodium. Remove 50 mg/L of hardness and about 25 mg/L of sodium goes in, which matters if anybody in the house is on a restricted-sodium diet.
  • Some scale is protectiveModerately hard water lays a thin layer inside household plumbing that guards against corrosion, so stripping hardness to zero everywhere is not automatically the goal.

The questions people actually ask

Will a water softener fix iron and the sulfur smell too?

No, and this is the most common expensive misunderstanding in the subject. A softener is an ion exchange machine designed for calcium and magnesium. It does not remove dissolved hydrogen sulfide, and it handles only low levels of iron before the iron begins to foul its resin. Systems that deal with all three are several units in a deliberate order.

Is hard water bad for you?

No. UF IFAS states it directly: hard water is not bad for us, and calcium and magnesium are an essential part of our diet. The case for softening is about scale in pipes and appliances, soap that will not lather, and dry skin and hair. It is not a health case.

Does a water softener add salt to my drinking water?

It adds sodium, which is not quite the same thing but matters for the same reason. UF IFAS gives the ratio: per unit of hardness removed, about half is replaced by sodium. If somebody in the house is on a sodium-restricted diet, the usual answers are a potassium chloride substitute in the softener, or leaving the kitchen cold tap unsoftened.

How much does a whole house filtration system cost here?

There is no honest single figure, because whole house filtration is a category rather than a product. A single sediment filter and a multi-stage iron, sulfur and softening train are both sold under that phrase and they are an order of magnitude apart. The water test is what determines how many units are needed, which is what determines the price.
